The Resort Garden — How to Bring That Holiday Feeling Home

Have you ever come back from a holiday and thought — I just want my home to feel like this?

I know that feeling well. It's actually what started this whole journey for me. Years ago, travelling to some of the world's most beautiful resorts during surf trips, I kept noticing how the outdoor spaces made you feel — relaxed, connected, like time had slowed down. Lush plantings, the sound of water, that seamless flow between inside and out.

I came back to Waiheke and thought — why can't we have that here? And honestly, we can. In fact, we're better placed than most. Waiheke's climate, its natural beauty, its light — it's the perfect canvas for resort-style garden design.

So what actually makes a resort garden feel like a resort?

It's not one single thing. It's a combination of elements that work together:

Seamless indoor-outdoor flow. The best resort spaces don't feel like you're "going outside" — they feel like the inside simply continues. Wide sliding or bifold doors, consistent flooring materials from inside to out, covered entertaining areas that work in any weather. This is something I design for in almost every project we do.

Layered planting. Resorts don't do sparse. They do lush, layered, considered. Tall canopy trees for shade and structure, mid-level feature plants for interest, and low-growing ground covers that tie it all together. On Waiheke, we're lucky to be able to work with subtropical species that really deliver that tropical resort feel — think large-leafed plants, palms, bold textures.

Water. Nothing says resort like the sound of moving water. A well-placed water feature — even a simple one — completely transforms the feel of an outdoor space. It adds calm, it masks noise, and it gives a garden a soul.

Defined zones. Great resort spaces have purpose. A dining area. A lounging area. A garden to walk through. Each zone feels intentional, not just a patch of grass with some plants around the edge.

Lighting. This is the one most people forget until it's too late. Landscape lighting extends your outdoor space into the evening and highlights the best features of your garden. The difference between a lit garden at night and an unlit one is dramatic.

Waiheke is the perfect place for this

We get more sunshine than almost anywhere else in Auckland. Our climate allows us to grow plants that would struggle elsewhere. And the lifestyle here — relaxed, outdoorsy, connected to nature — lends itself perfectly to outdoor living.

I've been designing resort-style landscapes on Waiheke for 25 years, and it never gets old seeing a client's face when it all comes together. If you've been thinking about transforming your outdoor space, let's have a chat. You might be closer to that holiday feeling than you think.
